New Computer Technology - When is enough, enough?

by Joshua Feinberg

New computer technology comes out continuously. As a computer consultant you probably want to keep up with all the new computer technology that comes along. Youre most likely in love with technology - always looking for a new intrusion protection product to play with or another border-gateway protocol. What you have to realize is that your small business clients arent experimenting with new computer technology and so you shouldnt be wasting your time investigating it.

New Computer Technology Distractions

New computer technology is a distraction you cant afford. Its easy to get caught-up with keeping-up, but, no one is paying you for your raw technical knowledge. They arent paying you for knowing the latest new computer technology, they are paying you for knowing the technology they are using.

If youve been in corporate IT for a long time youre way ahead of the average small business anyway. The average small business is going to be at least six to twelve sometimes even 18 months behind the new computer technology you see in the average enterprise IT shop.

In the early stages of your business, you have to put learning new computer technology on the back burner. Adjust your priorities and put 90 percent of your R&D on the back burner for the next three to six months. Concentrate on finding paying clients. If those paying clients start demanding skills with new computer technology, thats when you invest your time and energy.

The Bottom Line on New Computer Technology

Youre in the business youre in because you love new computer technology. Unfortunately, in the business building stage you cant afford to spend your time learning, you have to spend your time doing - and getting paid for doing it. New computer technology isnt being used in the majority of clients applications anyway. Put your passion for new computer technology on hold for a while and be passionate about finding steady, paying customers.

Media Addiction Quiz for Teens: Do TV, Video Games and Computers Run Your Life?

by Katherine Westphal

Welcome to "The Media Generation"

Teens are spending so much time watching TV and playing with their computer and video games that the Kaiser Family Foundation has dubbed this generation "The Media Generation."

The recent study found that children aged 8-18 were watching TV, playing video games, on their computers, and listening to music for a total of 6 hours and 23 minutes EVERY DAY! Many kids were doing two or more activities at once. Most of this time is still spent watching TV. Kids spent almost four hours every day watching TV. With so much time in front of TV and other media, perhaps Kaiser should have labeled it "The Media-Addicted Generation."

What excess TV, video game, and computer use may be doing to you

How much time you spend in front of a TV, video, and computer screen is important, because these activities have been linked to obesity, attention problems (like ADHD), and poor grades. Violent content may condition you to accept violence in your life. The sexual content of many popular shows and games may encourage you to experiment before you are ready. The TV can act as a depressant, stifle your creativity, encourage conformity, and simply waste your valuable time.

Find out if you are part of "The Media-Addicted Generation":

1. Does your family have more than one TV set? Yes [] No []

2. Are you in front of a screen for more than 2 hours per day?Yes [] No []

3. Do you sometimes have trouble getting TV or video game jingles "out of your head"? Yes [] No []

4. Is there a TV/video game/computer playing in your home much or all of the time? Yes [] No []

5. Do you have a TV, video game, and/or computer in your bedroom? Yes [] No []

6. Is it easy for you to turn off the TV/video game in the middle of a favorite show/game? Yes [] No []

7. Do you ever rush home, ditching friends and family, to catch a favorite TV show, play video games, or go on the computer? Yes [] No []

8. Do you frequently eat meals while in front of the TV, video games, or computer? Yes [] No []

9. Have you ever caught yourself unintentionally mimicking a TV or video game character? Yes [] No []

10. Do you talk to and play with your friends more than you watch TV, play games, and play with computers? Yes [] No []

11. Can you turn off the TV, computer, and video games OFF right now and leave them off for three days? Yes [] No []

12. Do you ever mindlessly surf through TV channels or the internet? Yes [] No []

13. Do you need TV, video game, or a computer to relax after a rough day? Yes [] No []

14. Do you feel edgy, anxious, or "not right" if there is no TV, video game, or a computer playing? Yes [] No []

15. Do you watch TV, play video games, and/or play on the computer more than spend time with your family? Yes [] No []

16. Do you ever watch the TV, play video games, or surf the internet longer than you intend to? Yes [] No []

17. Do you feel spend too much time with TV, video games, or computer? Yes [] No []

18. Have you missed a special event with friends or family because you were watching a TV program? Yes [] No []

19. Have you ever tried to quit watching TV, playing video games, or going on computer, but were unsuccessful? Yes [] No []

20. Do you have difficulty limiting the time you watch TV, play video games, or go on the computer? Yes [] No []

*Note: Time spent on the computer for homework purposes does not count:

To calculate your score: For all questions, except for #6, #10, and #11, give yourself 1 point for every "Yes" answer and 0 points for every "No". For questions #6, #10, and #11 give yourself 0 points for every "Yes", answer and 1 point for every "No". Add your total. Your total: ____________

Scoring:

0-6: Great! Your TV, computer, and video games are not in control of your life. You are. But keep an eye on how much time you spend with these activities to make sure an addiction does not sneak up on you.

7-14: You are moderately addicted to your TV, video games, or computer. Maybe all of them. The good news is that with a little effort, a list of fun non-screen activities, and a reasonable schedule you should be able to keep your addiction under control. "The TV-FREE System" also helps you create a schedule that keeps you busy with fun, goal-centered activities. Follow your dreams instead of staring at a screen..

15-20: Yikes. You probably have a serious addiction problem. You may need to take extreme steps, including getting rid of your TV or video games, to get in control of your time. Start with the device which squanders the most of your time. The good news is "The TV-FREE System" was designed to help even the most serious addict, and can be used for video game, or computer addiction as well.

Life is too short to "watch" it go by.

The Appeal of the Nintendo Wii

by Jonel Cordero

Why does it seem that Nintendos Wii system is become more and more popular over Microsofts Xbox 360 and Sonys Playstation3?

Its the appeal factor.

Okay, well that is obvious, but in the words of Malcolm Gladwell, what exactly makes the Nintendo Wii "tip" over the other next-generation systems.

First, lets go over the cost appeal. The Nintendo Wii sells for $249.99. Not bad, especially when the Microsofts Xbox 360 Platinum Package sells for $399.99 and Sonys 60 MB Playstation3 sells at $599.99. With this price, Nintendo targets a larger crowd, in terms of affordability, in comparison to the other game companies, which every conservative parent and gamer comes to appreciate. Next-generation system at a past-generation system price.

Now there is the creative playing appeal. Whats hard for stock investors to understand is that the video game industry is evolving. Nintendo has helped with this revolution (for those who didnt know, Nintendos original name for the Wii console was the Revolution) by offering the video gaming audience a totally different way to experience gaming. People love interaction and that is what exactly what Nintendo gives through the Wii. I consider the Wii as not a hardcore gaming console for the experience gamer, it is more so a new gaming console with a totally different dimension of play.

Cost of system; check. New creative way of playing; check. Last, the appeal of the Wii in general. Who would have thought that grandmothers would stay at home and bowl with their grandchildren? Who would have thought that instead of having Halo (popular first person shooter for the Xbox) tournaments, teens would be having tennis tournaments on the Wii. Who would of thought that family nights would start focusing on the Wii. The difference is this; Videogames tend to have almost an intimidation factor to them to the inexperienced gamer, especially ones as advanced as on the Playstation3 and Xbox 360. The Nintendo Wii was made with every single type of persons interests in mind. It was not made for you, or for me... it was made for "Wii".

Breathing New Life into the Computer Game and Health Market

Integrative Research is a company providing information on health and home-based business opportunities via the use of computer games.

(PRWEB) July 4, 2005 -- It's apparent that the use of computer games is on the increase, with more player diversification becoming obvious. According to a 2003 survey conducted by the Entertainment Software Association (www.theesa.com), more than one-third of computer and video game players at that time were women, whereas previously, most were male. Also, according to this survey, since 1999, the increase in computer and video game playing has increased overall, with many players now playing on mobile devices.

Computer games, whether delivered via a CD-ROM, or a Web-based Internet application, are literally popping up everywhere, delivering not only entertainment but also education. In addition, this medium is being used more often for marketing purposes of products and services, via the use of online games accessed within a Web site. The markets for educational computer games have also drastically increased, and the combination of fun and learning does seem very well received by consumers at large.

Since computer games are indeed very interactive, players get caught up in the action, accounting for the popularity of this medium. Unlike other mediums such as television and radio, computer games require input from the player (consumer), allowing the game to proceed or stop at will, and furnishing an adrenaline rush not unlike the rush felt by participation in traditional sporting events. Because of the interactivity, computer game users may retain knowledge longer making computer games promising educational tools.

A well established dietary supplement company, Integrative Research (www.IntegrativeResearch.com) has recently released online computer games that allow a visitor to their Web site to "zap" the evil germs that invade a body. Another game on the site combats the "evil forces" of online business scams. The "germ zapping" game is appropriately titled, "Beta Force", and appears within the Beta Force section of the site, (www.betaforcegame.com). The "scam" game is titled, "Scam Away".

Integrative Research has taken the educational experience of online game playing into the adult realm, and provides games that will educate adults about the effects of dietary supplements on overall health, as well as educate them on how to avoid being scammed when seeking an online business opportunity. Integrative Research combines these flash games with other proven marketing tools, such as online auto-responder e-mail marketing letters, e-books, banner ads, reports, etc., www.IntegrativeResearch.com

A Brief History Of Laptops

by Simon Goodman

The idea of Laptop came as early as the late 1960 with the Dynabook, but this Tablet PC was mainly for children.
There was no real commercial incentive to develop a truly portable computer, (and it was thought to be unpractical in any case), so, it was not until much later, with new developments in transistors and processors, that the laptop was considered as something more than a childs toy.
It was in the early 80s that the first truly portable computer was developed, the Osborne 1 did not have any batteries, (it had to be plugged in), but at least the data and computer could be transported.

A couple of years later, in 1982, the Compaq computers were released.
It is widely accepted that the Compaq was not much better than the Osborn 1 but because it was using the new popular MS-DOS operating system, (used on most IBM computers at the time), it proved an instant success.
A year latter Epson announced the first truly portable computer with a nickel battery. The Epson was more like an advanced calculator with only 80 characters displayed at any one time.

The Compass 1101 also introduced around the same time is credited for giving us the, now familiar, design of the laptop computer with the screen folded shut over the keyboard.

In 1984 the Gavilan SC and the Sharp PC-500 entered the market, with the Gavilan been the first to introduce the concept of laptop, (and a basic pointing device).
1984 also saw the arrival of the Kyocera Kyotronic 85, it was small and offered many applications such as a word processor, a modem or Spreadsheet and it was very popular indeed.

By the end of the 1980s many laptop manufacturers had developed fairly similar machines. All about ranging from the size of an A4 page to an A3. Most notably the NEC Ultralite, the Cambridge Z88 and the IBM PC Convertible. The Compaq LTE introduced the concept of a portable hard drive, (until that time the operating system was stored on ROM and Floppy drives were used).

By the beginning of the 1990s the look and feel of the laptop was defined by the Apple computers, (built in trackball, keyboard and Palm rest). Not to be outdone the IBM Thinkpad 700C introduced the TrackPoint a year later.

Since the mid-90s only technology has improved the laptop computers. Longer lasting batteries as well as huge hard drives now make the Laptop a serious challenger for the desktop.

Advantages of Ergonomic Keyboards

by Julien David

Ergonomic keyboards are specially designed computer keyboards with an aim to reduce stress on your wrists and forearms while typing. They have been around for quite some time now, and its been proven that the special contour designs of these keyboards are definitely worth the trouble.

A common ergonomic keyboard design is one where the keyboards seems to be split in half, and each half is positioned on an angle to match the shape of your wrists when typing.

If you use a computer frequently, and especially if you do a lot of typing, youll want to make sure you are comfortable with your keyboard. And so, buying an ergonomic computer keyboard would be a great investment for you. Youll save your hands, forearms and wrists from discomfort, making you more productive and allowing you to work for longer periods of time.

Also, if youve ever experienced pain in your hands, wrists or forearms associated with using your keyboard in the past, you will want to consider dumping your old keyboard and buying an ergonomic one to save you from the pain.

If your use of the computer doesnt include extensive keyboard work, you might not see the full benefits from an ergonomic keyboard. Although, I would still recommend an ergonomic keyboard for all computer users, its better to be safe than sorry.

Buying an ergonomic keyboard is a great investment that will save you in the long run.

Required Parts to Building a Gaming PC

by Julien David

If you are new to building your own custom gaming computer, this article will introduce you to the main components that make up a gaming PC. These components will be the guts of your gaming machine, so you need to choose them carefully. Starting with perhaps the most important part of any computer system:

CPU / Processor

The Central Processing Unit (also known as the processor) is considered the brains of a computer. It does all the mathematical calculations that the software asks it to. Without a decent CPU in your gaming PC, your games wont run very fast.

Motherboard

If the CPU is the brains of a computer, then the motherboard is the heart. All other components connect to the motherboard one way or another, so it acts as the hub of all the components in your PC. If you lack a good motherboard in your system, your gaming PC wont perform well no matter how good your other components are.

RAM

The RAM (Random Access Memory) in a computer is the memory that running programs rely on. The more RAM you put in your gaming PC, the faster your programs and games will run.

Hard Drive

The hard drive is used to store all your programs and data. You need a hard drive big enough to fit all your stuff on it, without it clogging up due to lack of room.

Graphics Card

The graphics card (also known as video card) will be one of the most important parts of your gaming PC. It is the component responsible for drawing all the 3D graphics and special effects that you see in the games you play. You need to get a good graphics card to be able to play the latest games in all their glory.

Case and Power Supply

Pretty self explanatory, the computer case houses all your precious little components under one roof. The power supply provides power to your PC. These two components are essential for a working gaming PC.

Conclusion

We have covered the main workhorse components that you will need to build your gaming PC with. You should also consider other components such as a sound card, networking card, and CD/DVD Drive, amongst others, to complete your gaming PC.

Playing To Win - How To Find The Best Gaming Laptop

by Garry Allen

Finding the best gaming laptop can be very frustrating at times. In fact, finding the best of any computer related products can be frustrating because the technology field is so fast paced.

One thing is for sure that whatever is top of the line today most assuredly will not be in the top in a couple of months.

As I said, the pace of technology is simply astounding. And it can also get pretty frustrating if you just bought what you thought was the king of gaming notebooks, only to have a new king appear on the market a few weeks later.

This is why it may be better to consider looking for certain qualities in a gaming computer, rather than a specific brand or model.

Models get switched out every so often.

Brands get hyped by the reporters and computer magazines one issue, only to have their reputations bashed in the next.

Instead, what I recommend is to hunt for consistent quality across the board instead of just a flash in the pixilated pan.

No matter what brand or model your considering, the best gaming laptop must first and foremost come with Intel Centrino mobile technology.

First off, these new chipsets make sure that your notebook doesnt burn through its battery after only a few rounds of Doom III. And secondly, this mobile technology maximizes the graphic output, making images and movement appear smooth and crisp, not choppy and blurred.

Of course, to really appreciate these high-grade visuals, you need a large, potentially wide screen display. In the area of 14 or 15 inches, with wide angles and crystal clear imaging.

The extra display size may make your laptop a bit more unwieldy, but youre there to play the computer, not lug it around.

Finally, to maximize your web gaming, you should get a laptop with the finest in wireless technology, such as Bluetooth and Wi Fi connectivity. These will add the mobile to your mobile gaming, allowing you to challenge the competition in San Diego, California and San Juan, Costa Rica.

Now when your comparing prices and models, it goes with out saying that you should maximize your hard drive space, games and graphics need alot of space. Also remember to maximize RAM memory, and processor speed as well. For all of these components are literally the backbone of any computer system, let alone the best gaming laptop.

Technology changes fast! Get the latest information, tips and reviews on the best laptops and computers available today. http://www.best-rated-laptops-and-computers.info

Computer Gaming Online Role-Playing

by Scott Soloff

Computer gaming online role-playing is quite a fun spin on the old favorite of role-playing games that have been sold in comic shops for years. In a way, this is consistent with the expanding world of were our leisure activities are going as computers become more and more ingrained in our society and culture.

Role-playing games started in the 1970s with Dungeons and Dragons and quickly grew to include virtually any type of game or scenario one could imagine including games that revolved around action-adventure, science fiction, espionage, horror, sports and a ton of other genres.

The Computer Version Of Role-Playing Games

Role-playing games eliminated the traditional cause effect method that board games utilized and turned games into an improvisational exercise that proved intriguing. In time, people started to use computer gaming online to expand how role playing games can be conducted. In the computer gaming online variant of role-playing, players will write/type their scenarios and submit them via email to the person running the game. The game master then weighs all the emails from the various players to decide how these scenarios play off against each other in order to further the game. Sounds fun, huh?

So How Do The Role Playing Game Producers Feel About This?

Now, while one would assume that the role-playing game companies would love the fact that there are computer gaming online means of playing the games and expanding their customer base, some role-playing game companies have some misgivings about this computer gaming online expansion.

In a way, the computer gaming online role-playing has hurt sales of game packages because people no longer have the need for a role-playing set as they are not playing in a room together and are connected electronically from all over the globe. It would be doubtful that the bottom will fall out on many of these game producing companies as the product that they offer is still very popular, but there have been some dollars lost due to the free competition that the computer gaming online role-playing provides.

Granted, many of these companies offer their own free online role-playing services as a means of promoting their product. They have also offered fee based subscription online role-playing games so the internet provides a solid revenue stream for the companies. There is a paradoxical relationship between the role-playing game companies and the internet, but ultimately, the internet has been good to these companies and will continue to benefit them provided the companies evolve accordingly.

Computer Game Review - Innovations And Developments

by Sandra Stammberger

The continuing advances in graphics technology, platform gaming infrastructure, processor technology and innovations in design will see more aggressive developments in computer games this 2006.

Gaming has traveled a long way today from the baby steps of the video games about thirty years ago. The square and jagged edged figures that used to dominate and entertain gamers on the screen is now more video-movie like if not life like that people today finds computer games more challenging and exciting.

The constant improvements made in computer technology exceeded expectations in the sales of computer games soft ware and has turned it into one big business in a very short span of time. The biggest impact on these games coming form the role playing games and the first person shooters.

The development of broadband had contributed very substantially to online gaming that in countries like South Korea, online gaming (Starcraft Gozu) has gathered a lot of followers dubbing the game fondly as its national sport. Online gaming has gained a popularity never seen before (or possible before), that international tournament are waged and battled online. Always trying to outwit and outplay the competition, world wide, online gaming has become very challenging and intense.

Where computer game designs used to be a simpler affair, today teams of artists, musicians, producers and gaming industries are working together to make the best and offer their best to the public that has patronized the games very well. The industry however has not, in marketing parlance, reached the peak. In my opinion, it is nowhere near it. The constant innovations that are shaping the computer games industry is so vast varied exciting and rewarding, enough material to motivate the designers and gamers to move on, that who knows what surprises are in store for the gaming public in the future.

What make computer games very popular are the regular releases of good computer game software. If you have not yet tried out the following, find a demo and find out for yourself.

1) Backyard Baseball 2005 2) Battlefield 2 3) Civilization IV 4) Dance Dance Revolution ULTRAMIX3 5) FEAR 6) Fifa 06 7) Food Fight! 8) Grand Theft Auto 9) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 10) Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap 11) Mario Kant DS 12) Need for Speed 13) Ninja Gaiden Black 14) Peter Jacksons King Kong 15) Resident Evil 4 16) Sid Meiers Pirates! 17) Sly 3: Honor Amongst Thieves 18) The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe 19) The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer 20) We Love Katamari

Console Gaming The technology race in the computer games category will be heavily participated by Microsoft with their Xbox 360 - powered by a multi core processing unit, Sonys Playstation 3 by a cell processor technology, and Revolution by Nintendo will allow player interaction through a wireless motion sensing controller.

The popularity of the computer and video games has been a big business that it has surpassed the revenues of the film industry excluding the films ancillary revenues. However additional business for the computer games also comes in the form of trading cards, T-shirt prints of popular characters in video games and game titles and television shows that features reviews and gaming competitions. Judging from continuing developments and innovations in the game designs and computer technology, the year 2006 will even be more exciting.

Interesting Computer Games Magazine

by Paul I. Etkin

A lot of people say that a computer games magazine can give you the edge that you need as a gamer, but I think that this is a

rubbish. I know. I read almost every computer game magazine that I can get my hands on. I read several technology magazines as well. The real thrill of computer games magazines is that you get to slaver over the new games and new

technology before anyone else even gets to see it. This is what I might call a unique thrill. But it is one of those thrills that is hard to describe to someone who is not interested in it. I know, because my girlfriend feels no fascination with my computer games magazine. She plays a few PC games, but none of them seriously. The first time she saw in the computer games magazine, she all but laughed in my face. She is a bit of a snob, I have always thought. She just could not understand why anyone would waste their time doing what I was doing.

The fact is though, that if you are serious gamer, a computer games

Magazine
is your hobby. When I get home from a hard day at work, I do not turn on the TV, but turn on the computer. When I feel like thumbing through something while using the bathroom or waiting at the doctors office, I do not look through the Sports Illustrated or even local news, I look through PC games magazine. When it comes down to it, there is really nothing to understand. The simple fact is that I loved computer gaming. I can not get enough of it, and so I like to read about it too.

Despite all of that, however I would not make the claims that my friend Steve makes. He is actually silly enough to say that

reading a computer games Magazine makes him a better player. This is even more ridiculous because he is one of the worst

computer games players that I've ever seen. I guess that some people would say almost anything for attention now. I know

that I've made some pretty silly claims my life myself, but I do appreciate it when my friends call me on it. But what it all comes down to is this. Do what you want because you want to do it. If you like reading on computer games magazine don't pretend that you're doing it for some higher purpose. The very fact that you enjoy it is reason enough if you ask me.

How Can Custom Gaming Computers Meet your Needs?

by Jordan Hall

How Can Custom Gaming Computers Meet your Needs?

Pre-made computer gaming systems are a dime a dozen; walk into your local Best Buy or Circuit City, and youre likely to see dozens of computer configuration options ready to be rung up and carried out the front door. Many of these assembly line computers carry impressive specifications, including the latest processors and video card combinations. However, at a certain point these big box computers show their limitations. They generally carry with them proprietary BIOS systems that are difficult or impossible to alter or update, making it difficult to make your gaming system compatible with the latest generations of processors and video cards. Additionally, the prefabricated computer options generally give you only one option in terms of hardware configuration. If you prefer to drop the multi-card reader, you are responsible for removing it yourself. More pressingly, if you desire to run two nVidia graphics cards simultaneously in an SLI configuration, you may not be able to; not every motherboard can support SLI, and there is no guarantee that the computer you just left Wal-Mart with will allow you the freedom to upgrade at your discretion. For serious gamers, increased configuration flexibility is a must. No two gamers are alike, after all, and each particular gaming predilection carries with it a necessary hardware solution.

One possible answer for these gaming requirements is custom computers. Primarily sold by companies online, custom computers start with impressive base configurations that consist of several of the top few processors and video cards and a hefty amount of system memory. Where these gaming computers differentiate themselves from their big box brethren, however, is in their ability to be customized in a multitude of areas. Avid gamers can elect to upgrade everything from the processor to the hard drive array, thus ensuring that any conceivable gaming need will be met by their new system. Many of the custom gaming computer providers also allow their customers to design or select a unique PC case, ensuring that their purchase is truly an individual one. Cooling systems and power supplies are also ripe for customization, and in most cases they need to be in order to accommodate the more powerful hardware that is added to the configuration. Though many companies offer custom gaming computer options, some of the more reliable ones and their respective products are listed below.

What are Some Winning Custom Options?

- Alienware Aurora ALX - Alienware has long been known among the computing and gaming community as one of the industry leaders in custom computer systems. Alienwares computers are as or more powerful than anything else in the market, and they often compliment this technological superiority with unique styling, cooling, and sound dampening options. The Aurora ALX is no exception. The base price includes the top-of-the-line AMD processor, the dual-core Athlon 64 FX-60. The heat generated by this powerful CPU is dissipated through Alienwares custom liquid cooling system. As anyone who has dabbled in liquid cooling can attest, creating a successful and unobtrusive liquid cooling system is a daunting task, so having a company provide one for you is a marked benefit. In addition to the processing and cooling, the Aurora ALX sports two top-end, 512MB ATi video cards running in conjunction via ATis Crossfire technology, resulting in amazingly powerful graphics processing capabilities. Where the Aurora ALX shines, however, is in its customization. The processor and video card array are capped out, but nearly everything else can be bumped up. If you so desire, you can even opt for such obscenely powerful options as 4GB of DDR RAM and a full terabyte (2 x 500GB) of hard disk storage. Dont expect this massive power to come cheaply, however; fully upgraded, the ALX can run upwards of $7000.

- Overdrive PC Torque SLI - Earning a lofty 8.4 from CNET.coms well-respected review staff, the Overdrive PC Torque SLI is another system that can run any piece of software that you throw at it, but it comes in at a much lower price than the Alienware offering. The Torque SLI sports a powerful AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 processor, 2GB of DDR RAM, and two top-end nVidia video cards running together in an SLI configuration. As you might surmise, the polygon-crunching power of this setup is quite impressive. Where the Overdrive really shines, however, is in its overclocked specifications. Overdrive calls their method of overclocking--pushing components to run faster than their rated speeds--Hyperclocking, and it entails bumping up the speed of the CPU, memory, and video cards together. The result is a configuration that easily topped CNETs different computing power tests. And while overclocking often results in system instability, Overdrive has created a combination that runs as stably and reliably as any non-overclocked configuration. Moreover, Overdrive employs a custom sound dampening system and whisper quiet fans--so quiet, in fact, that the reviewer claimed to be able to hear the hard drive heads. Though the case is fairly plain and no-frills, the system inside sports ample power to drive any game on the market at its maximum graphic potential. Its still pricey at over $4000, but it represents a substantial savings over the Alienware model.

So Whats the Catch with Custom Systems?

The two above options illustrate the unparalleled power of custom gaming computer systems, but they also indicate their major (and, one could say, only) downfall: their massive price tags. While computer technology often falls in price rapidly, the newest components invariably carry exorbitant price tags. When you construct an entire system based off of these technologies, then, its easy to see how their costs can soar through the stratosphere. There are other, less expensive options. The ABS Ultimate M6 Sniper, for example, has a base price of roughly $1600, and configured as it was for its 7.5-worthy CNET review it still is priced almost $2000 less than the Overdrive Torque. However, you cant expect the same level of performance from this non-overclocked model. Regardless of where you look, the same basic principal applies: you have to pay for the best performance and the best components. If the idea of forking out that kind of cash makes you cringe, building your own custom gaming rig might be a more feasible solution.

Video Games: Playstation

by Nancy Jackson

Electronic amusements are more than idle pastimes. They have become important social and even educational tools. Interactive games are picking up where social groups have left off, and PlayStation is one manufacturer that is leading the revolution.

Video games and interactive hardware can provide endless amusement for players of all ages. Virtually anyone who likes to play any type of game can happily settle in with an electronic option. There are strategy, quest and searching games; tag and board games, action and racing games, mysteries, expeditions and even aerobic instruction games. The market is flooded with interactive fun for every sort of gamer.

Electronic game software can entertain, and also educated. While all gaming programs are designed to provide fun, many people are able to develop certain skills and talents while playing. Interactive hardware can help you with reading, writing and arithmetic. Budding artists can hone their drawing skills, while aspiring racecar drivers learn to downshift and turn the wheel just a little before the road curves. Problem solving, dancing and other skills can be developed as players interact and learn from one another.

Game manufacturers have been using electronic components and features since the 1950s. From these humble beginnings, the electronic gaming industry has seen multi-billion dollars in growth. Electronic games adapted technological trends and evolved into highly qualified computer systems.

The United States were first to furnish players with video games. Limited knowledge and development costs kept the games rudimentary compared to todays standards, but fun nonetheless. First-generation gamers fondly remember the thrill of graduating from on screen "ping pong" games of dots and dashes, to playing a "space wars" game with sound and explosive effects. As we eagerly plugged these video game dinosaurs into our black and white television sets, we thought it could never get any better.

The phrase "video games" generally encompasses the genre of interactive, electronic amusement and sport. Early developers introduced arcade games to barrooms and pinball alleys. These first coin-operated machines used television screens for display, and were equipped with speakers for sound effects and music. Coin-operated arcades, and the video games within them, were huge sensations and before long, video game systems began to make their ways into our homes.

There came a point on the video game timeline that developers stopped to realize that computers were widely available and easier to use. At this point, the video game world turned to a new direction. These home computers would become channels for the modern video game industry. Developers began exploring running strategies, and designers worked hard to find ways to attract players to these newly reinvented video games.

As a result of these new technological breakthroughs, Sony introduced PlayStation in 1988. Largely a home electronics company, at that time Sony did not have a great deal of knowledge about video games. At that time, the gaming world had reached a new high. There was no better time for Sony to get a leg up on the competition with its multi-media machine called PlayStation. This innovative gaming system introduced what we now know as the CD-ROM. In the first year, Sony sold out seven million Playstation systems worldwide. Following the initial PlayStation success, Sony began using CD-Is in the early 1990s. These small disks provided gaming enthusiasts to play interactively over a computer system.

Personal gaming systems have quickly evolved into a huge industry. Nintendo, Gameboy and PlayStation are big names in video games. These manufacturers realize that game enthusiasts can be anyone from a toddler to a retiree, so theyve developed games and software to appeal to the masses. More corporations are coming on board to develop their own arcade and video game products. The industry continues to grow, and developers keep on working to find new ways to amuse us.

Building the Ultimate Gaming Computer

by Damien Oh

To every gamer, owning the ultimate gaming computer is just like a dream come true. Not only can you play all type of games, you can also enjoy the realism of the graphics and sound, as if you are part of the game.

So what does it take to build the ultimate gaming computer? First, you must have enough cash to spare. Next, you have to know which parts to choose, which will be covered in the next section.

CPU

The first thing to consider is definitely the CPU. The latest addition and the best of Intel CPU is the Intel Core 2 Extreme processor. According to Intel, the latest processor has a 4 MB of shared L2 cache (usually only 512K - 2MB) and up to 1066MHz FSB, a notch higher than its previous version. It also has better power efficiency and cache management system, optimized for multi-thread functions. If you are a hard core AMD fan, do not panic, AMD has always been a strong competitor to Intel. Its Athlon 64 FX-62 CPU is the first Windows-compatible 64-bit PC processor and has the capacity to handle the most demanding application with outstanding performance. With over 100 industry accolades under its belt, what else do I have to say?

Memory

The CPU and the memory must always be hand in hand. You cant expect a great performance from the CPU without the support of the memory RAM. Being the stabilizer of the whole system, the bigger the memory size, the better, faster and more stable computer you can get.

Though the fastest RAM speed is DDR2 1066MHz, there are not many motherboards that can support this. The recommended speed to go for is DDR2 800MHz dual channel 2GB. Most motherboards come with 4 DIMM slots; therefore you can install two sets of the dual channel RAM to bring the total memory to 4GB. Few applications can fully utilized the 4GB memory size yet, but it never hurt to have more memory space. It also means that you can save your memory upgrade cost for the next few years.

Graphics Card

Graphics technology has gone a long way since the monochrome era. The current technology is the SLI (Scalable Link Interface) or CrossFire technology, developed by nVidia and ATI respectively. Both technologies utilize dual graphics cards and the fast PCI-Express 16x slot to deliver faster and better images. To build a ultimate gaming computer, the graphics card should at least be a PCI-Express 512MB GDDR3 SLI/CrossFire ready graphics card.

Hard Drive

When building the ultimate gaming computer, it is not the size of the hard drive that counts, but its performance that really make the difference. A 200GB hard drive is usually more than enough for the storage of your games and applications. The main differences lie in the buffer and the drive interface. The buffer determines how much data can be stored for pre-fetch while the drive interface determines how fast the data can be transferred. The most suitable choice for an ultimate gaming computer is the SATA-2 16MB buffer 200GB hard drive.

Monitor

Is there a need to say about this? The obvious choice is at least a 21" LCD monitor with 2ms response time and DVI video input. The rest is extra.

Sound Card

Yes, you really need a sound card, even though that motherboard of yours boosts a 7.1-channel onboard sound card. If you are going after the best sound possible, there are no alternatives other than the Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum PCI Sound Card. It is currently one of the best sound cards that can create 3D sound in a two-speaker or headphone setup. This is definitely the one to go for.

Speaker

How can you have a great sound card without a great speaker? In order to match the performance of the great sound card you bought, a 5.1-channel speaker system or higher is necessary. A 5.1 channel means the right and left front satellites, right and left surround satellites, a center speaker and a subwoofer. A 6.1-channel adds a rear speaker while a 7.1-channel adds left and right rear speaker. In addition, a hardware decoding system for Dolby Digital and DTS is also essential to produce the best sound effect. A good recommendation is Logitech Z-5500 6.1 channel speaker system

Keyboard/mouse

The keyboard and mouse are the only devices that you use to input command to the system. For best gaming effect, a programmable hot-key keyboard and a sensitive, accurate mouse are required. The best in the market now is the Logitech G15 gaming keyboard that allows you to program up to 18 hot-keys and Logitech G7 laser gaming mouse that allows the user to adjust the resolution to 2000dpi.

Power Supply (PSU)

With so many high-power consuming parts inside the case, you will need a high rating power supply to support it. PCI-Express SLI graphics card requires a different power connector. This has to be taken in account as well. Recommended: 600W SLI ready PSU with 120mm fan.

Motherboard

I have list most of the parts, what about the motherboard? It is easy, once you have gathered all the parts above, the motherboard that can supports all of these parts will be the one you go for. To summarize, your motherboard need to

  • Be a socket 775 board for Intel processor or socket 939 / AM2 board for AMD processor
  • Has at least 4 slots of DIMM for memory RAM. DDR2 800MHz for Intel chip and DDR 400MHz for AMD
  • Support SLI or CrossFire, has at least two PCI Express 16x slot
  • SATA 2 interface for hard drive

I have more or less covered the requirement to build an ultimate gaming computer. A piece of advice is that building the ultimate gaming computer can easily cost you several thousand dollars. Within a few months, all of those top of the line components will be replaced with a new range of products with even greater performance. If you are restricted by budget, do not attempt to build the ultimate gaming computer. Invest in only a few products such as the RAM and graphics card will be sufficient for you to enjoy your game. Who says gaming has to be an expensive hobby?
