New computer technology comes out continuously. As a computer consultant you probably want to keep up with all the new computer technology that comes along. Youre most likely in love with technology - always looking for a new intrusion protection product to play with or another border-gateway protocol. What you have to realize is that your small business clients arent experimenting with new computer technology and so you shouldnt be wasting your time investigating it.

New Computer Technology Distractions

New computer technology is a distraction you cant afford. Its easy to get caught-up with keeping-up, but, no one is paying you for your raw technical knowledge. They arent paying you for knowing the latest new computer technology, they are paying you for knowing the technology they are using.

If youve been in corporate IT for a long time youre way ahead of the average small business anyway. The average small business is going to be at least six to twelve sometimes even 18 months behind the new computer technology you see in the average enterprise IT shop.

In the early stages of your business, you have to put learning new computer technology on the back burner. Adjust your priorities and put 90 percent of your R&D on the back burner for the next three to six months. Concentrate on finding paying clients. If those paying clients start demanding skills with new computer technology, thats when you invest your time and energy.

Youre in the business youre in because you love new computer technology. Unfortunately, in the business building stage you cant afford to spend your time learning, you have to spend your time doing - and getting paid for doing it. New computer technology isnt being used in the majority of clients applications anyway. Put your passion for new computer technology on hold for a while and be passionate about finding steady, paying customers.

The Appeal of the Nintendo Wii

Why does it seem that Nintendos Wii system is become more and more popular over Microsofts Xbox 360 and Sonys Playstation3?

Its the appeal factor.

Okay, well that is obvious, but in the words of Malcolm Gladwell, what exactly makes the Nintendo Wii "tip" over the other next-generation systems.

First, lets go over the cost appeal. The Nintendo Wii sells for $249.99. Not bad, especially when the Microsofts Xbox 360 Platinum Package sells for $399.99 and Sonys 60 MB Playstation3 sells at $599.99. With this price, Nintendo targets a larger crowd, in terms of affordability, in comparison to the other game companies, which every conservative parent and gamer comes to appreciate. Next-generation system at a past-generation system price.

Now there is the creative playing appeal. Whats hard for stock investors to understand is that the video game industry is evolving. Nintendo has helped with this revolution (for those who didnt know, Nintendos original name for the Wii console was the Revolution) by offering the video gaming audience a totally different way to experience gaming. People love interaction and that is what exactly what Nintendo gives through the Wii. I consider the Wii as not a hardcore gaming console for the experience gamer, it is more so a new gaming console with a totally different dimension of play.

Cost of system; check. New creative way of playing; check. Last, the appeal of the Wii in general. Who would have thought that grandmothers would stay at home and bowl with their grandchildren? Who would have thought that instead of having Halo (popular first person shooter for the Xbox) tournaments, teens would be having tennis tournaments on the Wii. Who would of thought that family nights would start focusing on the Wii. The difference is this; Videogames tend to have almost an intimidation factor to them to the inexperienced gamer, especially ones as advanced as on the Playstation3 and Xbox 360. The Nintendo Wii was made with every single type of persons interests in mind. It was not made for you, or for me... it was made for "Wii".

A Brief History Of Laptops

The idea of Laptop came as early as the late 1960 with the Dynabook, but this Tablet PC was mainly for children.
There was no real commercial incentive to develop a truly portable computer, (and it was thought to be unpractical in any case), so, it was not until much later, with new developments in transistors and processors, that the laptop was considered as something more than a childs toy.
It was in the early 80s that the first truly portable computer was developed, the Osborne 1 did not have any batteries, (it had to be plugged in), but at least the data and computer could be transported.

A couple of years later, in 1982, the Compaq computers were released.
It is widely accepted that the Compaq was not much better than the Osborn 1 but because it was using the new popular MS-DOS operating system, (used on most IBM computers at the time), it proved an instant success.
A year latter Epson announced the first truly portable computer with a nickel battery. The Epson was more like an advanced calculator with only 80 characters displayed at any one time.

The Compass 1101 also introduced around the same time is credited for giving us the, now familiar, design of the laptop computer with the screen folded shut over the keyboard.

In 1984 the Gavilan SC and the Sharp PC-500 entered the market, with the Gavilan been the first to introduce the concept of laptop, (and a basic pointing device).
1984 also saw the arrival of the Kyocera Kyotronic 85, it was small and offered many applications such as a word processor, a modem or Spreadsheet and it was very popular indeed.

By the end of the 1980s many laptop manufacturers had developed fairly similar machines. All about ranging from the size of an A4 page to an A3. Most notably the NEC Ultralite, the Cambridge Z88 and the IBM PC Convertible. The Compaq LTE introduced the concept of a portable hard drive, (until that time the operating system was stored on ROM and Floppy drives were used).

By the beginning of the 1990s the look and feel of the laptop was defined by the Apple computers, (built in trackball, keyboard and Palm rest). Not to be outdone the IBM Thinkpad 700C introduced the TrackPoint a year later.

Since the mid-90s only technology has improved the laptop computers. Longer lasting batteries as well as huge hard drives now make the Laptop a serious challenger for the desktop.

If you are new to building your own custom gaming computer, this article will introduce you to the main components that make up a gaming PC. These components will be the guts of your gaming machine, so you need to choose them carefully. Starting with perhaps the most important part of any computer system:

CPU / Processor

The Central Processing Unit (also known as the processor) is considered the brains of a computer. It does all the mathematical calculations that the software asks it to. Without a decent CPU in your gaming PC, your games wont run very fast.

Interesting Computer Games Magazine

A lot of people say that a computer games magazine can give you the edge that you need as a gamer, but I think that this is a

rubbish. I know. I read almost every computer game magazine that I can get my hands on. I read several technology magazines as well. The real thrill of computer games magazines is that you get to slaver over the new games and new

technology before anyone else even gets to see it. This is what I might call a unique thrill. But it is one of those thrills that is hard to describe to someone who is not interested in it. I know, because my girlfriend feels no fascination with my computer games magazine. She plays a few PC games, but none of them seriously. The first time she saw in the computer games magazine, she all but laughed in my face. She is a bit of a snob, I have always thought. She just could not understand why anyone would waste their time doing what I was doing.

The fact is though, that if you are serious gamer, a computer games

Magazine
is your hobby. When I get home from a hard day at work, I do not turn on the TV, but turn on the computer. When I feel like thumbing through something while using the bathroom or waiting at the doctors office, I do not look through the Sports Illustrated or even local news, I look through PC games magazine. When it comes down to it, there is really nothing to understand. The simple fact is that I loved computer gaming. I can not get enough of it, and so I like to read about it too.

Despite all of that, however I would not make the claims that my friend Steve makes. He is actually silly enough to say that

reading a computer games Magazine makes him a better player. This is even more ridiculous because he is one of the worst

computer games players that I've ever seen. I guess that some people would say almost anything for attention now. I know

that I've made some pretty silly claims my life myself, but I do appreciate it when my friends call me on it. But what it all comes down to is this. Do what you want because you want to do it. If you like reading on computer games magazine don't pretend that you're doing it for some higher purpose. The very fact that you enjoy it is reason enough if you ask me.

These first coin-operated machines used television screens for display, and were equipped with speakers for sound effects and music. Coin-operated arcades, and the video games within them, were huge sensations and before long, video game systems began to make their ways into our homes.

There came a point on the video game timeline that developers stopped to realize that computers were widely available and easier to use. At this point, the video game world turned to a new direction. These home computers would become channels for the modern video game industry. Developers began exploring running strategies, and designers worked hard to find ways to attract players to these newly reinvented video games.

As a result of these new technological breakthroughs, Sony introduced PlayStation in 1988. Largely a home electronics company, at that time Sony did not have a great deal of knowledge about video games. At that time, the gaming world had reached a new high. There was no better time for Sony to get a leg up on the competition with its multi-media machine called PlayStation. This innovative gaming system introduced what we now know as the CD-ROM. In the first year, Sony sold out seven million Playstation systems worldwide. Following the initial PlayStation success, Sony began using CD-Is in the early 1990s. These small disks provided gaming enthusiasts to play interactively over a computer system.

Personal gaming systems have quickly evolved into a huge industry. Nintendo, Gameboy and PlayStation are big names in video games. These manufacturers realize that game enthusiasts can be anyone from a toddler to a retiree, so theyve developed games and software to appeal to the masses. More corporations are coming on board to develop their own arcade and video game products. The industry continues to grow, and developers keep on working to find new ways to amuse us.

Building the Ultimate Gaming Computer

To every gamer, owning the ultimate gaming computer is just like a dream come true. Not only can you play all type of games, you can also enjoy the realism of the graphics and sound, as if you are part of the game.

So what does it take to build the ultimate gaming computer? First, you must have enough cash to spare. Next, you have to know which parts to choose, which will be covered in the next section.

CPU

The first thing to consider is definitely the CPU. The latest addition and the best of Intel CPU is the Intel Core 2 Extreme processor. According to Intel, the latest processor has a 4 MB of shared L2 cache (usually only 512K - 2MB) and up to 1066MHz FSB, a notch higher than its previous version. It also has better power efficiency and cache management system, optimized for multi-thread functions. If you are a hard core AMD fan, do not panic, AMD has always been a strong competitor to Intel. Its Athlon 64 FX-62 CPU is the first Windows-compatible 64-bit PC processor and has the capacity to handle the most demanding application with outstanding performance. With over 100 industry accolades under its belt, what else do I have to say?

Memory

The CPU and the memory must always be hand in hand. You cant expect a great performance from the CPU without the support of the memory RAM. Being the stabilizer of the whole system, the bigger the memory size, the better, faster and more stable computer you can get.

Though the fastest RAM speed is DDR2 1066MHz, there are not many motherboards that can support this. The recommended speed to go for is DDR2 800MHz dual channel 2GB. Most motherboards come with 4 DIMM slots; therefore you can install two sets of the dual channel RAM to bring the total memory to 4GB. Few applications can fully utilized the 4GB memory size yet, but it never hurt to have more memory space. It also means that you can save your memory upgrade cost for the next few years.

Graphics Card

Graphics technology has gone a long way since the monochrome era. The current technology is the SLI (Scalable Link Interface) or CrossFire technology, developed by nVidia and ATI respectively. Both technologies utilize dual graphics cards and the fast PCI-Express 16x slot to deliver faster and better images. To build a ultimate gaming computer, the graphics card should at least be a PCI-Express 512MB GDDR3 SLI/CrossFire ready graphics card.

Hard Drive

When building the ultimate gaming computer, it is not the size of the hard drive that counts, but its performance that really make the difference. A 200GB hard drive is usually more than enough for the storage of your games and applications. The main differences lie in the buffer and the drive interface. The buffer determines how much data can be stored for pre-fetch while the drive interface determines how fast the data can be transferred. The most suitable choice for an ultimate gaming computer is the SATA-2 16MB buffer 200GB hard drive.

Monitor

Is there a need to say about this? The obvious choice is at least a 21" LCD monitor with 2ms response time and DVI video input. The rest is extra.

Sound Card

Yes, you really need a sound card, even though that motherboard of yours boosts a 7.1-channel onboard sound card. If you are going after the best sound possible, there are no alternatives other than the Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum PCI Sound Card. It is currently one of the best sound cards that can create 3D sound in a two-speaker or headphone setup. This is definitely the one to go for.

Speaker

How can you have a great sound card without a great speaker? In order to match the performance of the great sound card you bought, a 5.1-channel speaker system or higher is necessary. A 5.1 channel means the right and left front satellites, right and left surround satellites, a center speaker and a subwoofer. A 6.1-channel adds a rear speaker while a 7.1-channel adds left and right rear speaker. In addition, a hardware decoding system for Dolby Digital and DTS is also essential to produce the best sound effect. A good recommendation is Logitech Z-5500 6.1 channel speaker system

Keyboard/mouse

The keyboard and mouse are the only devices that you use to input command to the system. For best gaming effect, a programmable hot-key keyboard and a sensitive, accurate mouse are required. The best in the market now is the Logitech G15 gaming keyboard that allows you to program up to 18 hot-keys and Logitech G7 laser gaming mouse that allows the user to adjust the resolution to 2000dpi.

Power Supply (PSU)

With so many high-power consuming parts inside the case, you will need a high rating power supply to support it. PCI-Express SLI graphics card requires a different power connector. This has to be taken in account as well. Recommended: 600W SLI ready PSU with 120mm fan.

Motherboard

I have list most of the parts, what about the motherboard? It is easy, once you have gathered all the parts above, the motherboard that can supports all of these parts will be the one you go for. To summarize, your motherboard need to


  • Be a socket 775 board for Intel processor or socket 939 / AM2 board for AMD processor
  • Has at least 4 slots of DIMM for memory RAM. DDR2 800MHz for Intel chip and DDR 400MHz for AMD
  • Support SLI or CrossFire, has at least two PCI Express 16x slot
  • SATA 2 interface for hard drive

I have more or less covered the requirement to build an ultimate gaming computer. A piece of advice is that building the ultimate gaming computer can easily cost you several thousand dollars. Within a few months, all of those top of the line components will be replaced with a new range of products with even greater performance. If you are restricted by budget, do not attempt to build the ultimate gaming computer. Invest in only a few products such as the RAM and graphics card will be sufficient for you to enjoy your game. Why Spyware is so Dangerous

Spyware is software that gets installed on your computer without your knowledge and sometimes is designed to record what you type on the keyboard and send to others. What makes spyware so dangerous is that it likes to collect personal information to include credit card numbers and passwords and send them elsewhere. The most dangerous spyware is of the type that records your keystrokes and sends the information to the interested parties. Think about it. If you use the Internet to pay bills, do banking, purchase items, or look up personal information then you will inevitably use keystrokes to direct the processes. You will use keystrokes to enter credit cards, passwords, birth dates, social security numbers and many more important data items that uniquely identify you as the owner of that information.

Now no one would put software on their computer if they knew it would steal their personal information and the makers of spyware know this and came up with a solution. Another characteristic that makes spyware so dangerous is the fact that it usually installs without the knowledge of the user. How does it do this? It usually gets installed as part of an installation of desirable software you are aware of installing. In other words, the spyware piggybacks off of a software product you willingly put on your system. Viruses can install spyware also.

There are many other characteristics of spyware that add to its danger. Some spyware opens remote access to a stranger to your computer. A stranger can actually control your computer from some other location and you would never know who. There is an especially dangerous sort of spyware known as a bot. Bots, once installed on your system, can be controlled via the Internet Relay Chat protocol or channel and can do things like start emailing viruses and spam to other users when it collects all email addresses found on your computer. Then the email recipient multiplies the problem when the same bot installs on the target computer and starts emailing spam and viruses as well. If you have virus protection that checks outgoing emails. This can get especially irritating if you have a bot on your system as the virus scanner will catch every outgoing mail with this virus and drag your system down in terms of performance. It is a good thing however if your antivirus software does catch it instead of allowing it to be spread.

Another characteristic of spyware that makes it so dangerous is the fact that it can significantly degrade the performance of your computer. All of that activity engaged in by the spyware program utilizes the resources of your computer. Just having a piece of software that is engaged in creating popup ads heavily consumes computer resources. Plus, these spyware programs are not models of high-performance software. These programs are typically written by hackers who have little or no knowledge of sound software design principles and can create software that performs very poorly by consuming too many system resources.

And to sum it up, spyware is an absolute nuisance. It just makes a computing experience dreadful. Get yourself some good tools to protect against it.

Contrast - If your gaming laptop LCD has poor contrast, it could pose a problem. You must sse the game properly in order to compete effectively. You should normally look for a contrast ratio of 400:1 or higher.

Viewing angle - This is often an overlooked LCD feature. You want to make sure not to have poor viewing angles because it may prohibit others from watching the screen as you play the game.

When it is all said and dome, gaming laptop computers are all about power. Do not expect you twelve-pound notebook with various features to run on battery power all that long. Instead, make sure that you enjoy the jaw drops that you will get when you come into your LAN party location with your very own new, screaming-fast gaming laptop computer. DDR2 SDRAM - is a new standard that can boost conventional SDRAM memory up to speeds well over 200MHz and beyond. For example, the IBM ThinkPad T43, thanks to the Sonoma Chipset or platform has 533MHz DDR 2 SDRAM.

This is much better than standard SDRAM which tops out around 150-166MHz and DDR SDRAM which starts at 200MHz and goes up to around 400MHz. Video RAM or VRAM is special memory thats used by video adapters on your notebook. This is RAM that is dedicated to handling the visuals and graphics on your notebook computer. This is helpful if you want to play a lot of the latest 3D video games on your notebook.

It is somewhat different from ordinary RAM because it can be accessed by two different devices at once - enabling screen updates while the video processor processes new data. VRAM provides better graphics but is more expensive than ordinary RAM.

SPEED

You need the fastest computer money can buy. Period!

In order to get the maximum performance from your ultimate gaming computer you must have the fastest speed you can get or afford. Your ultimate PC must be able to process and handle the latest 3D video games with ease. There is nothing as annoying as your PC freezing up in the middle of some major gaming action!

Therefore, your Processors speed is very important.

CPU or Central Processing Unit, you probably know it as the processor! Its the heart or rather the brain of your notebook or computer. It does all your computers data processing and applications. Since it does most of the work, its usually the most expensive part of your notebook computer.

Go with SATA!

SATA is a type of hard drive and stands for Serial Advanced Technology Architecture. It was developed by a whole group of companies including Seagate, Intel, Maxtor, Dell and others. SATA transmit data in a serially (in a single stream) as opposed to PATA or Parallel ATA which is commonly referred to as an IDE hard drive.

Serial ATA hard drives uses less power and are ideal for notebook computers, they are also more advanced than PATA hard drives which uses multipe streams of data - go figure! But Serial Technology carries data in a single stream and unlike PATA is not limited to a particular clock speed, Serial transfers data packets almost 30 times faster than parallel.

If top performance in your notebook is one of your goals, go with a SATA hard drive.

Intel Pentium M processors are commonly found in a lot of notebooks and laptops. When in doubt also go with a Pentium!

The speed of microprocessors is measured in MHz. MHz is short for megahertz. One MHz equals one million cycles per second. The speed of processors, usually known as clock speed, is measured in megahertz (MHz) or these days in gigahertz (GHz).

The higher the clock speed, the faster the computer will process applications and data. It determines how powerful your notebook computer will be. Processor speeds for notebooks or laptops are steadily increasing, not quite the same as a desktop but the gap is narrowing quickly. Speeds of 3.4GHz or more.

Dont forget to ask or check the hard drive speed! A 7,200rpm hard drive is faster than a 4,200rpm or 5,400rpm and usually gives better performance.

DISPLAY

You need the sharpest, brightest display screen or all the above points are moot!

Display quality is also extremely important to your gaming experience. Make sure the resolution and display quality of your notebook computer can handle the graphics for 3D Gaming.

What to keep in mind...

SVGA Resolution. Put simply, computer images are made up of dots, the more dots you have - the better the image. SVGA Resolution is made up of 800 x 600 dots.

Many notebook computer have XGA (1024 by 768 dots) or SXGA (1280 x 1024 dots), these resolutions will give a higher quality image. WXGA stands for widescreen XGA.

TFT Active Matrix Display. TFT stands for thin-film transistors and many high-end notebook computers use (TFT) active matrix liquid crystal displays.

If display quality is your main reason for buying a notebook, its best to give it the old eye test and check out the image quality first-hand and decide for yourself. Panasonic, Toshiba, Sony, and others are known for their high quality monitors - this quality is also present in their notebook display screens.

So when buying your perfect Gaming Notebook Remember This:

Graphics + Ram + Speed + Display = Perfect Gaming Notebook

Since we are certain these types of sites would not house links to us, we investigated further and determined that some of our faithful visitors may be the victims of adware or spyware.

What is adware?

Adware, in it's most sinister incarnation, is a program that runs on your computer (like a virus) and occassionally pops up ads or redirects your browser to websites you had not chosen to visit.

What is spyware?

Spyware is software that collects personal information from you without your knowledge or permission. The information spyware collects can range from all the web sites you visit to sensitive information including user names and passwords.

How can I make sure I don't get these on my computer?

* Never download programs or files from a website you don't know and trust.
* Never open email attachments unless you know what they are. If you receive an email from a friend, but the text is strange and you don't know what the attachment is do not open it. Write to your friend and make sure they sent the email.
